Grow Your Blog 2014- Redwork portraits

I began embroidering in 1998 when I started a summer job at the Saratoga Battlefield in upstate NY. All of the other interpretive Rangers had skills when we were stationed at stop 2 on the tour road (the Nielson House), except me. I read for a few weeks, but I had a difficult time putting my book away when visitors arrived. Plus, my introverted nature would allow me to use the book as a crutch. I needed something else. As a kid I did long stitch needlepoint, & remembered enjoying it. Therefore, I decided crewel work & embroidery would be perfect.

Me as an Interpretive Park Ranger in 1998

Now, here I am, nearly 16 years later, still embroidering, & writing/blogging about it! Sharing my work on Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram...

My current love is embroidered portraits. Ones that I completed recently are of 2 of my favorite singer/songwriters.

I have loved Richard Marx's music since I 1st heard Should've Known Better on Fly 92.3 FM (Albany, NY) at the ripe old age of 13. I have seen him in concert 3 times, & have all of his albums. I sing along in the car, & on my ipod while I embroider in my room.

Portrait of Richard Marx traced on muslin
I typically trace the pattern, either one I create, or one I buy, on bleached or unbleached muslin using a no. 2 pencil. As I did in the above image.

Generally I watch movies or listen to music while I stitch. Here, I had a night of music movies while stitching.

About half way through embroidering Richard Marx

The finished redwork portrait below. I'm thinking of creating a bunch of embroidered portraits of singers that inspire me & make a quilt out of them...

The finished embroidered portrait of Richard Marx

I re-discovered Gavin DeGraw when he appeared on Dancing With the Stars. I bought his current album then, & started listening to his 1st album that I got when I worked at Borders in Saratoga Springs, NY. (Oh, how I miss Borders.) Now I have all of his albums & listen to them almost as much as the a fore mentioned Mr. Marx.

Traced out and ready to stitch- Gavin DeGraw

I love redwork embroidery for 2 reasons.
1.) Red is my favorite color & that's why I was originally drawn to it.
2.) it is very simple & clean. By simple I mean crisp, uncluttered, unpretentious, not easy. There is still a certain level of mastery required, though it is great for beginners because it, typically, only requires mastery of 3 different stitches (back stitch or outline stitch, french knots & lazy daisy).

I love the way this portrait came out. It is casual,  & slightly primitive, but modern in its own way.

  1. Hi Patricia,

I'm visiting from the Grow Your Blog party. I look forward to getting to know you better. We are like neighbors as I live right outside of Albany and only 20 minutes from you. I'm so happy to meet another New Yorker. Your embroidery is gorgeous! I plan to look around a little more and then be on my way to visit the others. I do hope you will stop by for a visit and enter my giveaway. Have a wonderful weekend and stay warm! Hugs – Donna

  98. Your work is quite unique. I was going to say it looks simple and effective ... but I went on assumption it was all backstitching. But french knots and daisy chains do require a knack to them. Well done.

    Happy partying!

  99. Hi Tisha,
So lovely to meet you via your blog. I love your redwork, I too have done some over the years but nothing as awesome as your music portraits! I think the idea of a quilt is cool.
I love the sound of your summer job at the Battlefield. I am a historian (amongst other things) and a couple of years ago I was lucky enough to visit Gettysburg - it was one of the highlights of my life if that doesn't sound too dorky. One reason being that I thought that I would never get there as I live in Melbourne, Australia. I would love you to come visit me at http://kittenstitching.blogspot.com or you can find my blog Kitten Stitching at Vicki's party post.
    hugs from Oz, Kaye

  100. Thank you for visiting me. It gave me a chance to come over and meet you! I am working my way very slowly through the GYB participants. I love your redwork embroidery. Embroidery is almost a lost art. I started embroidering at age eight with my own design, and have loved it since. You've inspired me to pull out my embroidery floss!

  103. Hi Tisha - am returning your visit to my blog 'steamfairiecraft'. I just love your redwork and the portraits are great. I'm planning on doing a Dr Who quilt - probably in blue - for my best friend - a massive Dr Who fan - using patterns I found on Fandom in Stitches - I'm not brave enough to draw my own yet - but I'll get there. I've added myself as a follower as I'm keen to see more of your work :)

Your use of redwork in a modern context is very original! I haven't done any embroidery since I was a child, but am now seeing many interesting examples on blogs. Fun!

  108. Oh, I've never seen, to embroider Portraits - a beautiful work you're doing.
I myself am unfortunately too clumsy with my hands, I can only knit something with coarse wool and not just ...
I am also an introvert (autistic) and I often read books during breaks and everywhere. Better than doing nothing ...
I will gladly re-visit your blog and look forward to your visits with me.

(I also have not yet visited all the blogs of the party, I'm doing for a long time ... )

  116. Hi, I'm Wanda. Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier this week (tidbitsandtreasures2011.wordpress.com). I'm happy to return the visit.

Your hobby of stitching artist faces is fascinating. I think the best part of GYB thus far has been finding the many unique ways people have of creating art. Thanks for sharing.

  118. Stopping by from the GYB party - I too love the look of red (or blue or green or black) work. Actually planning a project for a quilt (because almost everything I do these days has to become a quilt)that will probably be done in a coral color. Wonder what you would do to define dark hair?
